Location & Land Characteristics

The Tana River County offers some of the best land development opportunities in Africa: top quality soils, 600-700 mm annual rainfall, proximity of export port and consumption centers.

There are two rainy seasons:

  • The long rainy season (‘cool season’) starts usually mid –March and lasts until early June
The short rainy season which starts mid-October and ends mid-January.
  • Irrigation is probably not necessary to achieve the Sweet Sorghum grain & stalk yield objectives under the Business Plan. However, to ensure crop yield stability, it is projected to install a salvage irrigation system based on a network of water wells and travelling guns.

Water supply is ensured by the shallow aquifers (the large Tana river is bordering the Estate). Land lease costs are a bargain compared to agricultural land in other sugar /ethanol producing countries such as Brazil, India or Australia (50 US$/ha versus 400-900 US$/ha in Brazil).
15.000 hectares of unoccupied, savanna natural land has been secured by Afrinol limited under a 30 years long term lease contract.

Mombasa Export Port is 200km away from the establishment site. The access to the all-weather tarmac road going to Mombasa is just 12 km away from the plant site. The average transit time of half a day for loaded trucks.
