General Considerations

Sweet Sorghumis a sub-tropical and tropical crop. It is one of the most efficient photo synthesizers in the plant kingdom (it is C4 plant). Sweet Sorghum needs strong sunlight, fertile soil but requires only 650 mm to 850 mm of rain. The Sweet Sorghum takes about 90 to 120 days to reach grain maturity. In Galana region, Sorghum is sown in March-April, at the beginning of the main rainy season. The first crop season starts end of July and lasts 2 weeks. When the short rainy season starts in October-November, new shoots break out from buds on the joints of the Sorghum setts allowing a second crop in March of the following year.

Under the climatic and soil conditions prevalent in Galana, salvage irrigation (200 mm /ha) and good agricultural practices, high yield Sweet Sorghum varieties will produce between 2.5 to 3.5 T /ha during the main crop and 2.0 to 2.9 T/ha during the ratoon crop.

With the introduction of high yield Brazilian or Indian Sweet Sorghum Varieties, it is foreseen that the grain yield will exceed 4.5 tons over 2 crops. Crop rotation with Soybean will be done after 3 successive years of Sweet Sorghum plantation.
